4 Tips to Help Your Job Search During Quarantine

 In Blog

The coronavirus has upended the global economy and left millions unemployed. Job hunting in the equipment industry during a quarantine has challenges that job seekers have never had to face. Although most job-seekers can’t rely on traditional networking strategies because of the quarantine, many companies are still hiring. Here are four tips to help improve your job search during quarantine.

1. Network

While you might not be able to attend conferences and other networking events, you can still leverage technology to continue building your professional network. You can connect with people virtually using email, phone calls, video conferencing, messaging apps, social media, group chats, webinars, and more. The key is to find the combination of tools that works for you. Which tools feel most natural to you? Which ones can you integrate into your daily schedule? One area to focus on is your LinkedIn profile. Having a thorough and up to date profile will increase your visibility to potential employers.

2. Lean on Your Community

It is during hard times that communities need to come together. If you are struggling because of the situation with COVID-19, don’t hesitate to reach out to members in your community. Some community members are in a better position to help than others. People are empathetic by nature, and they want to support each other. Connecting with other members of community may open you to new job opportunities.

3. Give Extra Attention to Your Cover Letters

This is the perfect time to work on writing better cover letters. With social distancing measures in place, the first impression that your resume and cover letters make are more important than ever. The most important thing is to tailor the letters to specific companies and job descriptions. Employers can tell if a cover letter is generic, but when they see that a candidate has taken the time to customize their letter, they want to learn more about what the candidate brings to the table.

4. Revamp Your Resume

Many resume guidelines change over time, so this is a good opportunity to reevaluate your resume. For example, it is conventional to keep resumes one page, but many employers now prefer longer, more informative resumes. Two page resumes have become much more common. Employers spend more time reading longer resumes, which can end up making these resumes more memorable. Lengthening your resume can also give you the space to explain gaps in your work history.

While job hunting during a quarantine is difficult, many of us don’t have the ability to wait until the quarantine ends to start looking. Even if you can’t work during the quarantine, you can still take an active approach to your job search by networking online, reaching out to your community for support, and working to improve your resume and cover letter.
